ABSTRACT
Much evidence supports the view that family background has significant influence on the academic achievement of student’s for this reason, this study was aimed at finding out the influence of family background on academic achievement of student’s in Business studies. The population consisted of all the student’s in Junior secondary three from all public secondary schools in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area numbering 1320.
An achievement test was administered on a sample of 360 respondents selected through simple random sampling, the data collected were analyzed using the mean and t-test at significant influence on the academic achievement of students in Business Studies. It also discovered three ways through which family structure influence student’s academic achievement in Business studies.
Relevant recommendations were made based on finding among which is that teachers should create awareness in parents on the importance of keeping small family as they will be able to effectively provide the physical needs of their children and also motivate, give attention, encourage, stimulate, and support them in their school work.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The overall importance of education in general and technology in particular to humanity cannot be over – emphasized. No nation can afford to neglect business at any field of endeavour.
Business is imperative for useful living in any society. It is at the center for producing resources necessary for socio – economic and scientific development needed for the advancement of any nation.
In recent years much has been said about secondary school student’s poor performance in business. Performance in business studies has been dwinding. For instance, Okoye and Okeke (2007) in their study found that in 2002, 2003, and 2004 the percentage of candidates who passed Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination (JSSCE) at credit level were 30.3%, 42.2% and 30.2% according to these order.
Similarly, Egbunonu and Ugbaja (2009) reported that only 30.29% of the business studies students who sat JSSCE between 2000 an 2005 passed business studies at credit level (A1 – C6). To this end, several factors have been identified by researchers as being responsible for the persistent poor performance recorded in business studies at Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination. Some of these include inadequate number of qualified Teachers, lack of educational facilities like a well – equipped shops.
Overloaded syllabuses, laziness by teachers and students, lack of interest on the part of the students poor teaching methods by teachers, large class size/ teachers: students ration and family background of the student’s (Essien, 2002), Despite the fact that many Educationist believe that family background has influence on children’s performance in school considering that education starts from the home, not much empirical studies have been carried of in recent times to support this assertion.
Hence, there is need to carry out this study to obtain an authentic and current information on how family background influences student’s academic achievement in Business studies in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the problem
The extent to which a child’s family background influence his academic achievement has been quite controversial. According to Obayan (2003) a stable and well developed children can be guaranteed by stable family.
A significant study by Feinstein (2003), shows that the effects of parents educational level on children’s long – term educational achievement are apparent in the child’s performance. Feinstein’s (2001) study further showed that children’s of parent with low educational level who show promising early signs of cognitive development at age two are predicted to fall behind children of parents with high education level by the age of five.
However, Ibeh (2005) stated that it is important to note that while some disadvantage have the potential to lead to under – achievement, order factors (resilience factors) can provide an individual child with the resources to overcome them.
Though many researchers in recent past had professed conflicting stand on the level in – which the family background of a child affect his academic achievement. However, none of these researchers investigated the influence of family background on student’s academic achievement in Business studies in secondary school in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
The problem of this study therefore, was to determine the influence of family background on student’s academic achievement in business studies in secondary schools in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
1.3 Purpose of the study
The main purpose of the study was to find out the influence of family background on academic achievement of secondary schools in business studies in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
Specifically, the study will determine the influence of
- Family structure (Monogamous and polygamous families) on student’s academic achievement in business studies.
- Parent’s level of education on student’s academic achievement in business studies.
- Parent’s occupation on student’s academic achievement in business studies.
1.4 Research Questions
Three research questions were posed to address the problems of their study.
- How does the family structure (Monogamous and polygamous influence student’s academic achievement in business studies?
- How does the parent level of education influence student’s academic achievement in business studies?
- How does the occupation of parent influence student academic achievement in business studies?
1.5 Significance of the study
This study would awaken business studies teachers to the fact that student’s come from different family backgrounds and therefore have different upholding. It would enable teachers to pay more attention to student’s individual differences. The would go a long way in motivating the weak students to improve. The would be of beneficial to guidance counsel and the school in which the students are studying.

1.6 Research Hypotheses
Three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.
- There is no significant difference in the mean score of student’s from monogamous family and those from polygamous family of the influence of family structure on academic achievement of students in business studies in secondary school in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
- There is no significant difference in the mean score of student’s whose parents have had high level of education on the influence of parent’s educational level on academic achievement of students in business studies in secondary school in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
- There is no significant difference in the mean score of student’s whose parents are Government workers and those whose parents are Non – government workers on the influence of parent’s occupation on academic achievement of students in business studies in secondary school in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
1.7 Delimitation of the study
This study was only delimitated to ascertaining the influence of family background and academic performance of students in Business studies Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
It was also delimited to influence of family background on academic achievement of secondary schools in business studies in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
1.8 Limitation of the study
The major constraints faced in the study were financial and time constraint.
1.9 Definition of term
Academic: This relates to school, colleges and universities, or connected with studying and thinking (not with practical skills).
Achievement: This refers to something that is very good and difficult that you have succeeded in doing.
Occupation: This refers to a job or profession through which living is earned.
Monogamy: This refers to the practice of being married to only one spouse at a time.
Polygamy: This is the precise or custom of marring more than one wife of husband at the same time.
Pedagogical: this refers to the methods or activities of teaching.
Technology: This is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
Resilient: Ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult situation.
