Akwa Ibom Federal College of Education Set to Commence Academic Activities As Council Meets Stakeholders

The Federal College of Education (FCE), Ididep, located in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has announced its readiness to commence academic activities in September 2024.

This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr. Cletus Obun, during a meeting with stakeholders from the LGA on Monday.

Recall that the Federal Government approved the establishment of the College of Education last year, alongside other institutions and the Akwa Ibom State Government subsequently handed over the Certificate of Occupancy to the Federal Government.

Mr. Obun commended Senator Ita Enang for his efforts in attracting the project to Ibiono Ibom LGA, which will contribute to the overall growth and development of the area.

He noted that about 80% of the first batch of students admitted to the College will be indigenes, and 100% of junior staff will be drawn from the community.

Obun stated that students from the area will no longer need to travel to Uyo or other local governments or states to attend school, as the College will provide a local option.

He added that the institution will bring economic benefits to the community, with an influx of people and increased economic activities.

“The secondary schools here should empty themselves into the institution because we are going to take off along with Degree programmes.

“The community has so much to benefit. For us the first consideration for admission should be a standing policy, the indigenes first if possible 80% to encourage the community.

“Indeed when we take off by the second year, we are sure that our brightest students from first year should be earning a scholarship.

“We want to see backing from the federal government in terms of its institutions and Agencies from TETFUND, NDDC, the Federal Ministry of Education to National Council of Education.

“We want to see them fast track the processes and not allow bureaucracy to dim the light that is coming on and to reduce the speed which we are taking on because the community is ready,” Obun added.

The Provost of the school, Dr. Edem Ntuk, emphasized the importance of meeting with the community before commencing activities on campus.

He acknowledged some initial issues with the community but noted that they have been resolved, paving the way for the institution’s commencement.

Senator Enang praised President Tinubu for supporting the institution and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, for constituting the governing council.

He hinted at plans by the Nigeria Delta Development Commission and the Federal Ministry of Works to construct internal roads within the school.

Enang urged the governing council to strive for excellence and hinted at future plans to upgrade the college to a university.

The Ibiono Ibom LGA Transition Chairman, Mr. Nsikanabasi Obot, commended the federal government and Senator Enang for bringing the institution to the area, assuring that the LGA will take ownership of the facilities.

In response, the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom LGA, His Royal Majesty, Okuku Dr. Ime Inyang, commended the council for visiting the community and the federal government for citing the institution in the area, adding that the college will attract more federal presence into the community

He urged the council to fulfill their promises to the community, assuring that the community will provide a comfortable environment for staff and students.

“We will do all we can to make you ( the governing council) comfortable. In terms of employment, we are happy of the assurance you’ve given us. The local content law is there.”
