Prepositions and their Influence on Students Performance in English
Abstract
The study was conducted to investigate prepositions and their influence on students’ performance in English: a study of selected secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. Three research questions were stated to guide the study. The survey research design was employed in the study. The population of the study was 1671 students from nine (9) public secondary schools in the study area.
The sample size of the study was one hundred (100) senior secondary two students drawn from two public secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. The instrument for data collection was the prepositional test (PT). The data collected were analyzed using the simple percentage.
Findings showed that: most of the students failed in their placement of preposition in sentences influence on students’ performance in English language; that the problems of misused prepositions influence students’ performance in English language; and that students do not know how to deploy the preposition of time, preposition of place, preposition of movement, preposition of manner,
preposition of an agent of instrument, preposition of measure, preposition of source and preposition of possession which influence the performance of students in English language in secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the teacher must focus on the student’s motivation in using preposition of place by explaining the characteristics and function of preposition of place.

This chapter focuses on the analysis of the research methods and design that were adopted in the course of this research. The research was designed to accesses the differences that exist in the academic performance of students with different learning strategies in Biology in secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. 3.1 Area of the study
This study is conducted in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, bounded by Itu, Ikono, Ini Local Government Area Natural Resources: Mineral resources include deposits of various stones, clay, sand and crude oil. There are forest resources such as palm trees, rubber, timber, and others Ibiono Ibom is predominantly and agrarian Local Government Area, also peopled by traders and craftsmen.
The people of the area are of the majority Ibibio stock. They speak Ibibio and Efik Languages. Their cultural heritage includes Akata, Ebre, Ekpe, Uwan, Obon, Atat, Ekong. The territorial unit and geographical area consists of nine (9) clans, thirty three (33) groups and One Hundred and Ninety three (193) villages. The region of Ibiono Ibom currently has various educational institutions including secondary schools.

The above nine (9) schools are found in different placing in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. They are professed to offer quality secondary education to both the citizens and alien residents.
3.2 Design of the Study
The research design adopted for this study was survey research design. The design enables the researcher to use questionnaire to gather from the respondents.
3.3 Population of the Study
The population of the study was made up of all the Senior Secondary Two (SS2), students. The subject in focus was English language in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The total number of students in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area according to Local Education Committee 2022 is 1671 from 9 public secondary schools. The record attached at the appendix.
3.4 Sample and Sampling Technique
Through a simple random sampling technique, two (2) public secondary schools were selected out of the nine (9) public secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom. A total of 100 SS2 students were selected for the study from two (2) secondary schools. In other words 50 students were selected from each of the two (2) secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

3.5 Instrument for Data Collection
The instrument that was used in gathering the needed data for study was a twenty item multiple choice questions entitled “Prepositional Test (PT)”. The Prepositional Test (PT) contained two sections. Section A and Section B, section a contained information about the respondent’s bio-data and section B contained twenty multiple choice questions with options lettered A to C.
3.6 Validation of the instrument
The Prepositional Test (PT) was validated by the research supervisor before it was produced for use.
3.7 Method of Data Collection
The instrument of data collection was administered to the respondents through a direct method administration. The researcher administered the instrument to the students through the approval of the Principles of the selected schools. After completion, the instrument was collected immediately to ensure 100% return.
3.8 Method of Data Analysis
The method used in analyzing the data collected was simple percentages.
