The Influence of Learning Environment on the Teaching and Learning of English Language
Abstract
The study investigated the influence of learning environment on the teaching and learning of English language. The study was conducted in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The sampled population consisted of some selected students and teachers in Etinan Local Government Area. A simple random sampling technique was adopted to select the size of 100 students and 50 teachers. Questionnaire was used in order to get information from the respondents. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study.
A simple percentage test measure was used in analyzing the data. The findings of the study revealed that the school surrounding affects the way students think, that there is a positive relationship between students learning environment and their performance. Some recommendations were made such as teachers of English should be encouraged to be more resourceful and employ methods and techniques that will enhance performance at all levels. It is also recommended that government should establish schools in noise free areas so as to enhance students and teachers performance.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background To The Study
The learning environment can play a powerful role in student’s academic success. This environment has the ability to affect a young person’s development and is capable of sending strong subconscious messages. A student’s concentration and motivation level can easily be influenced by physiological needs.
The school environment which include the classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, laboratories, teachers quality school management, teaching methods, peers etc are variable that affect students’ academic achievement (Ajayi 2001 and olu chukwa 2000). Hence the school environment remains an important area that should be studied and well managed to enhance student’s academic performance.
The issue of poor academic performance of students in English has been of much concern to the government, parents, teachers, and even students themselves. The quality of education not only depends on the teachers as reflected in the performance of their duties, but also in the effective co-ordination of the school environment (Ajao 2001)
School environment which include instructional spaces planning, administration places planning, circulation spaces planning, spaces for convenience planning, accessories planning The teachers as well as the students themselves are essential in teaching-learning process.
The extent to which student learning could be enhanced depends on their location within the school compound, the structure of their classroom, availability of instructional facilities and accessories, it is believed that a well planned school will gear up expected outcomes of education that will facilitates good social, political and economic emancipation, effective teaching process and academic performance of the students. Poor lighting, noise, high level of carbon-dioxide in classrooms, and inconsistent temperatures make teaching and learning difficult.
1.2 Statement Of The Problem
Emphasizing the important of school environment to students academic performance. Oluchukwa (2000). Asserted that school environment is an essential aspect of educational planning. He went further to explain that “unless schools are well sited, buildings adequately constructed and equipment adequately utilized and maintained, much teaching and learning may not take place”. The high level of students academic performance may not be guaranteed where instructional space such as classrooms, libraries, technical workshops and laboratories are structurally defective.
It is therefore the concern of this study to examine the effect or impacts of learning environment on the teaching and learning of English language and to seek preferred solutions to these problems so as to better the performance of students in English language.
1.3 Purpose Of The Study
The main purpose of this study is to find out the influence of learning environment on the teaching and learning of English language. Specifically, the study will:
- Examine the relationship between school environment and the student academic performance.
- Examine the impact of school facilities on the academic performance of students in English language.
- Investigate the extent to which school location affect the teaching and learning of English language.
1.4 Research Questions
- Is there any relationship between school environment and the student academic performance?
- To what extent school facilities affect student performance in English language?
- To what extent does school location influence the performance of secondary school students in English language?
1.5 Significance Of The Study
This study is essential as it will be useful to the teachers, students, employers of labour and curriculum planners, as well as the ministry of education, school administrators and the nations at large.
It is hoped that this study will provide information for parents, educators and school administrators to reflect upon various factors that help students in achieving their academic goals. In so doing they can investigate the possibility of introducing those factors to their school, which may consequently lead to enhancing students educational outcomes in school.
1.6 Limitation Of The Study
This research project is limited to influence of learning environment on the teaching and learning of English language, a case study of some selected secondary school in Etinan local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state. The major limitations were inadequate finance, insufficient research information on the topic of the research, time and distance during the period of writing. However, if tested with large populations similar result will be obtained, hence validity will be maintained
1.7 Delimitation Of The Study
Since all the secondary schools in the state could not covered, the study will only considered some selected schools in Etinan local Government Area.
This means that the findings made cannot be generalized beyond this area.

Influence: The power or ability to affect some one’s beliefs or actions.
Learning environment: The school’s learning environment includes the school building and its surrounding.
Teaching and learning: Gives information to the class so as to enable them to learn something.
