Social Exchange Indices and Interpersonal Relationship among Students

 ABSTRACT

This study examines the extent to which social exchange indices (reward or benefits, mutual benefits and cost) influences the interpersonal relationships among students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study.

The population of the study consists of all the students in the College. The theories used by the researcher to back up the study are social exchange theory and the attachment theory. The researcher studied the population of 10, 000 students whereby Morgan table was used to obtain the sample size which stand at 370. Structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data from the 370 respondents.

From the analysis, it was revealed that when establish interpersonal relationships, they benefit more and perform better. It was obvious that different factors motivate students to go into interpersonal relationships and some of these factors are affections, emotional support, financial support, group studies and other forms of gratifications. At the end, findings and recommendations were duly presented in a clear term.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background of the Study

Individuals engage in series of interdependent interactions that generate obligations among the exchange parties. Owolasi (2015) asserts that when one party provides another with a valued and beneficial resource, an obligation is generated to return a beneficial resource.

A series of mutual exchange strengthen the quality of the relationship between the exchange parties which thereby produces beneficial and productive behaviours. Interpersonal relationship is the relationship between two or more individuals. Human beings are gregarious in nature.

Though being social is innate nature of mankind, life experiences help in shaping the relationship with others. Developing and maintaining interpersonal relationship is important for success in life. Interpersonal relationship serves as a base for social support that plays a crucial role particularly in emotionally charged situations.

It is on that note that the researcher to examine the influence of the assumptions of the social exchange theory on interpersonal relationships among students of Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit in Nsit Ibom L.G.A of Akwa Ibom State.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

Developing and maintaining of interpersonal relationship is important for success in life. Interpersonal relationship serves as a base for social support that plays a crucial role particularly in emotionally charged situations. It is also noted that interpersonal relationship enhances overall wellbeing of man.

Social exchange theory has proven to be an effective and versatile tool to understand relationships. In selecting a friend, or regulating a relationship, social exchange theory is an interesting alternative to approaching relationships.

Despite the substantial amount of literature on these topics, there are still many questions left to be answered: in a socially charged academic environment such as College of Education, Afaha Nsit on what predicates a student interpersonal relationship?

In light of plenty options available to students as young people, how do they determine a realistic relationship option; is it essentially based on the desire to pass examinations or generally on benefits, reciprocity, commitment and many more issues are what the researcher wishes to investigate.

1.3  Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of this study would be:

  1. To ascertain the perceived level of interpersonal relationship among College of Education Students in Afaha Nsit Campus.
  2. To ascertain how the social exchange theory influence interpersonal relationship.
  3. Find out the perceived rewards of various interpersonal relationship among Students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit.
  4. To ascertain the values which Students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit attach to interpersonal relationship in Afaha Nsit Campus. 

1.4   Research Questions

The research questions of this study would include:

  1. What is the perceived level of interpersonal relationship among students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit?
  2. How does exchange theory influence interpersonal relationship among Students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit?
  3. What are the perceived awards of various interpersonal relationship among Students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit?
  4. What are the values which students of College of Education attach to interpersonal relationship in Afaha Nsit?

1.5 Justification of the Study

The findings of this study will be useful in the following ways:

It is an open secret that the findings of this study will help researchers, counselors and administrators to understand how to build relationship among students, and by extension, motivate interpersonal relationship especially in the area of coexistent in general and among the students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit in particular.

It is said that among students, relationship determines their achievement and also relationship encourages performance (Aspelin, 2012) and students with high level of interpersonal relationship showed how level of emotional distress (Kenny, Dooley & Fetzerald, 2012).

Also, the findings of this study will provide further empirical basis to the social exchange theory as future researchers on related topics will also find this study a valuable literature.

1.6  Delimitation of the Study

Social exchange theory has many assumptions because of the growing interest in the theory. However, the basic assumption that this study is particularly concerned with is that relationships are formed on the basis of benefits (rewards), reciprocity (mutuality of benefits), and cost (who offers low cost). This study is delimited to finding how those indices shape interpersonal relationship among students of College of Education, Afaha Nsit.

1.7  Limitation of the Study

This study has some constraints which were, however, properly handled by the researcher, so as not to affect the quality of the work and the veracity of the findings. One of the limitations is in the use of description survey as the research design.

Descriptive surveys are often time consuming and the mood of the respondent at the time of administering the instrument can affect the sincerity of their response. Despite the limitation, it is used in this study because it is the best technique to obtain authentic data from the respondents. Data from controlled responses are easier to organize and analyze

1.8   Definition of Terms

The few key words that were operationally defined in the study include:

Interpersonal: Relationship that involves two students in varying level of intimacy.

Relationship: Various levels of acquaintances between students of College of Education.

Social Exchange Indices: The notion that benefits, commitment, trust and relationship.

Reciprocity: Mutual benefits one expects before going into interpersonal relationship.
