 Abstract

This study was designed to examine learning styles and academic performance of students in Social Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Nsit Ibom Local Government. Three research questions and hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of all the Junior Secondary Two – (JSS 2) students studying Social studies in all public secondary schools in the study area which stood at about one thousand two hundred and thirty (1,230) students.

Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of one hundred and fifty (150) students from (6) public secondary schools in the study area. Structure Questionnaire tagged “Learning Styles and Academic Performance Questionnaire (LSAPQ)” was adopted as an instrument for data collection.

The data generated for the study was analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) to show the relationship between the sub-variables used in the study. Findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between auditory learning style, kinesthetic learning style and visual learning style and students’ academic performance in Social Studies among JSS2 students in secondary schools in Nsit Ibom L.G.A

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background to the Study

Academic performance has for the past decades been the center of interest in educational research. Exploring the issue of performance has extended beyond simple issues of intelligence and prior academic performance into how learners interact with the learning material.

The concept of “learning style” has been defined by various scholars mostly as a signal for individual differences. In addition, learning style is used to describe individual differences in the way people learn. Each person has a unique way to absorb and process experiences and information. These differences may manifest it in life styles and even in personality types. However, Students learn in diverse ways, each of them has their own different styles. The manner by which each student learns will create a landscape by which the students will either maintain or restrain their intentional cognition. Therefore, the educators’ knowledge about the students learning style is beyond doubt.

Alfonseca (2015) stress that to be conscious of the students’ learning styles will facilitate the adaption of suitable techniques and methods to match with the students’ inclination. Recognizing the students’ learning style may very well aid the teachers in becoming more sensitive to students’ differences in the classroom, thus promoting enhancement to teaching practices that best suit the students learning styles.

According to Cuthbert (2016), awareness of the learning styles is vital for allowing adjustment in the educators’ pedagogic approaches. Every individual has its own natural or habitual pattern of acquiring and processing information in learning situations. The common ways or patterns by which people learn are known as their learning styles.

Learning styles are set of cognitive, emotional and psychological factors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how a learner perceives, interacts with and responds to the learning environment. Everyone has a combination of various learning styles. Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles while others find that they use different styles in different circumstances. A core concept is that individuals differ in the ways they learn.

Moreover, learning style has been defined by various scholars mostly as a signal for individual differences. These differences may manifest itself in ‘life styles’ and even in personality types. Honey (2014) describe learning style as an individual preferred or habitual ways of processing and transforming knowledge. It is the psychological attributes, resulted from individual differences which is determine particular strategies a student chooses while learning.

According to Felder (2015), learning styles were found to affect learners’ learning behaviours. Learners having different learning style would behave differently in the way they perceive, interact, and respond to the learning environment. Since learners differ in their preferences to certain learning styles, it will be important for teachers to examine the variations in their students on the features of their learning styles, because the information about learner’s preference can help teachers become more sensitive to the differences students bring to the classroom.

Adjustments can then be made to accommodate the students’ varied needs. This study, therefore, aims at examining the relationship between learning styles and students’ academic performance in Social Studies in secondary schools in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

There has been a public concern on the declining state of students’ academic performance in Social Studies in both internal and external examination over the years. Most especially at the secondary school level. Accordingly, several research reports has indicated that students performed poorly in secondary school social science subjects especially in Social Studies because of a certain learning style adopted by the learner.

However, many studies have been carried out on the various cause of this learning failure among whom are teaching methods, class size, school environment, school location and classroom variable etc. (Nwafa, 2015). Despite the effort exerted by concern citizen of this nation and other agencies to put a stop to this problem, all their effort seems to be abortive. As a result of this, parents have pointed accusing fingers on teachers in respect to students’ academic performance while teachers in turn put the blame on Social Studies on the inability to provide basic education materials to schools.

More so, no study has been carried out on the influence of learning styles and academic performance of Students in social studies in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. This has been a subject of concern to the researcher which necessitate the study on learning styles and students’ academic performance in Social Studies in secondary school in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.
